Vehicle detection is an important part of many automated gate systems, but solar-powered applications introduce an additional consideration: power consumption. When power supply may be limited, sensors still need to deliver reliable performance without creating unnecessary energy demand.
That is where the OVS-01SG offers a practical advantage. Designed as a solar-friendly Virtual Loop vehicle detection sensor, it provides the functionality of a traditional ground loop without requiring installers to cut into the pavement, while keeping current draw at 40 mA or less.
Virtual Loop Without Cutting the Pavement
While traditional inductive loops can provide reliable vehicle detection, installation requires cutting or coring the driving surface to place the loop underground. This can add time and complexity to a project, particularly when working with existing concrete or asphalt.
The OVS-01SG takes a different approach. Using microwave FMCW technology, it detects vehicles above ground, providing Virtual Loop functionality without the need to install a physical loop beneath the surface.
The sensor can detect both moving and stationary vehicles, with an adjustable detection distance of up to 18 feet. Installers can also adjust the detection angle, sensitivity, vehicle speed settings, and horizontal positioning to accommodate different gate layouts and approach paths.
For applications where cutting the pavement is undesirable or impractical, this can make vehicle detection significantly simpler to install.
Keeping Power Consumption in Check
For solar-powered gates, installation flexibility is only part of the equation. The detection sensor also needs to operate within the available power budget.
The OVS-01SG was developed with this consideration in mind, with a current draw of 40 mA or less to stay within acceptable limits for many solar power operators and manufacturers. Its three power consumption modes give installers additional flexibility to balance detection response with energy efficiency.
Depending on the needs of the application, the sensor can operate in low, normal, or high power mode. This allows the system to prioritize power conservation or faster detection response rather than relying on a one-size-fits-all setting.
