From the moment someone approaches an entrance to the moment they move safely through it, automatic door sensors play different roles in keeping the door functional and safe. Automatic door sensors generally have two different roles: activation and presence detection.

Activation detection initiates the door’s response, while presence detection monitors the area around the door to keep the threshold safe. Understanding the difference helps illustrate why both functions are important in automatic door applications.

Activation Starts the Interaction

Activation detection identifies when someone is approaching an entrance and signals to the door sensor that the door needs to open. Depending on the application, this could mean detecting someone approaching a sliding door or recognizing an intentional gesture like a wave in front of a touchless switch.

The goal of activation detection is simple: Should the door open?

Presence Detection Protects the Door Area

Once the door is open, presence detection serves a different purpose: monitoring the area around the moving door.

Consider someone who pauses in a sliding doorway or stands in the path of a swing door. Depending on the application and door controls, presence detection can help keep the door open or prevent it from moving into an occupied area, ensuring safe door operation.

For swing doors, the OA-EDGE T uses Active Infrared Triangulation Technology to provide door-mounted presence detection. Its modular design allows primary and secondary modules to be assembled based on the required safety level and the width of the swing door. The sensor is available in four lengths and can also be cut to length by the installer when needed. Designed for sliding doors, it combines infrared and microwave sensing with its exclusive BlueZone™ feature, which provides presence detection in the threshold while the door is open. Detecting in the threshold can increase the level of safety around the entrance while maintaining the performance needed for the application.

The X-Zone T also offers directional detection that can be adjusted to ignore traffic moving away from the sensor, allowing the door to close sooner. This can help reduce airflow between environmentally controlled areas and the outdoors.
