The Site

A major art gallery in an indoor environment, where REDSCAN detectors and other security products were installed high to avoid interrupting visitors' experience with the art pieces.

The Challenge

Protecting valuable artwork in a public gallery presents a unique balance between security and aesthetics. The museum needed to prevent visitors from touching or approaching sensitive pieces without installing visible barriers or intrusive equipment that could disrupt the viewing experience.

In addition, the detection system needed to integrate with the gallery’s existing security platform to allow security personnel to actively monitor and respond to incidents.

The Solution

OPTEX worked with the system integrator to deploy REDSCAN LiDAR detectors, creating invisible protection zones around sensitive artwork using precise laser detection.

Mounted high above the exhibit areas, REDSCAN units formed virtual laser walls capable of detecting hands, arms, and other body movements as visitors approached protected pieces. A single REDSCAN detector was able to cover large sections of wall or ceiling space while remaining discreet and out of sight.

For areas requiring broader protection, REDSCAN units were installed vertically to monitor up to 200 feet of wall space, allowing the system to detect a person approaching restricted areas. In locations where artwork was more susceptible to touching, detectors were configured to cover 33 feet of wall space, providing highly sensitive detection capable of identifying smaller movements such as an extended arm.

With detection ranges of up to 330 feet (Pro model), REDSCAN detectors allowed the gallery to maintain strong security coverage without introducing visible barriers or interrupting the visitor experience.

The Results

The gallery was able to protect valuable artwork without introducing visible barriers or intrusive security equipment. REDSCAN’s precise LiDAR detection created invisible protection zones that alert security personnel before visitors can make contact with sensitive pieces.

By mounting the sensors high above the exhibit areas, the system remained discreet and preserved the open viewing experience the gallery wanted for its visitors. At the same time, integration with the existing security platform allowed incidents to be monitored and addressed in real time.

The result was a security solution that safeguards high-value artwork while maintaining the gallery’s clean aesthetic and immersive visitor experience.
